Addressing the Realities of Health and Sex Education in Islamic Schools
Islamic schools can no longer avoid addressing health and sex education for Muslim children. Join ISLA to understand the complex realities surrounding health and sex education while working on a plan to address the topics more comprehensively in your own schools.
Whether your Islamic school is only an elementary school, or if it goes up to middle and high school, discover core principles and learning objectives that are developmentally appropriate across the grade-span. Discuss contemporary issues that make the teaching of these subjects even more important, and learn how to do so in a way that is culturally relevant for your school community.
The ISLA Leadership Retreat provides Islamic school administrators, department leaders, counselors, coaches and teacher-leaders the ability to explore this theme in a professional and supportive environment. Through interactive workshops and opportunities to learn from other experts in the field, ISLA Retreat participants walk away with a better understanding of the issues and possible solutions to this complex topic.

The Diyanet Center of America is a beautiful Ottoman-style campus with a mosque, restaurant, lodging, cultural center, pool, and more. The ISLA Retreat 2023 will have its workshops and activities occur at this center, including lodging from Friday night- Sunday morning (2 nights). Food will be catered from the delicious halal restaurant on site, which specializes in authentic Turkish cuisine. (See below for videos of the on-site lodging.)

Member School: $575 / personNon-Member School: $650 / person

Your ISLA Retreat ’23 Registration Ticket includes the following:
- Retreat Registration from Friday-Sunday: Retreat opens at 12:30 pm Friday Dec 1 and goes until Sunday at 12 pm EST
- Five Halal Meals : Friday Dinner, Saturday Breakfast, Saturday Lunch, Saturday Dinner, and Sunday Breakfast served from the Diyanet Center of America’s authentic Turkish restaurant
- Shared Lodging on the Diyanet Center of America campus: Check in on Friday Dec 1 – Check out on Sunday Dec 3
ISLA will assign lodging in same-gender rooms at its discretion, with up to 4 individuals in a shared room and shared bathroom.

Add-On Options
Limited private and dual occupancy lodging is available on a first-come, first-serve basis for an additional cost. Additional nights can also be added for an additional cost. Additional meals for early / late arrivals may be purchased at Diyanet’s highly acclaimed restaurant (on site) for an additional charge, during normal restaurant business hours.
Travel Information
If flying into Maryland or the surrounding area, the closest airport is Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI).BWI is about a 30 minute drive (without traffic) to Diyanet Center of America. We suggest planning to take an Uber/Lyft or other ride share from the airport to Diyanet. ISLA will not be able to arrange for transport from the airport to the retreat location. Other airports that may be considered include:
- Reagan National Airport (DCA)
- About 30 minutes (without traffic) to the Diyanet Center of America (link to directions)
- As this airport is located in Washington, DC, traffic can get congested coming into/out of here if driving during rush hour.
- Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
- About 50 minutes (without traffic) to the Diyanet Center of America (link to directions)
